Tough Mudder Diary #3 – 101 Days To Go

Turkey Burning

Well we are well and truly into January now and Turkey Burners are starting to dwindle at the gym.   I have utmost respect for anyone getting off the sofa and down the gym. Having set out on that journey many times and failed I wish anyone trying all the success in meeting their goals.  I do however still laugh at the posing and flexing in mirrors playing on your phone crowd, whatever works.

As a regular Mens Health I noticed loads of guys following their transformation plan, i’ve never seen guys doing some many cable wood chops or lunges.


My Tough Mudder Training

I have upped my workouts now to start increasing the cardio and strength work.  I’ve found January hard with my training, I’ve been putting in the work but didn’t feel that January surge like all the new year new you people.

Carrying over the speed and intensity from last year has almost left me feeling I am not putting in the same concerted effort like everyone else, I know this isnt the case but I feel like I need to do something extra.


I’ve now added treadmill running to my routine, its a start and coming from where I was a few months ago I can see how far ive come.  At the moment I am managing 2-5min bursts with a 1% incline and the speed somewhere between 6-7 on the speed on the machine.  I expect this to pick up a lot more now however i’m trying to resist the urge to push myself too hard and be disappointed, small increases every time are key here.

The watt bike has become a regular on my cardio work, the gym has the My Ride+ system so I’ve been enjoing rdes along the New Jersey waterfront and some more challenging national parks in the U.S.

Battle Ropes, what can I say about this seemingly innocuous rope, oh my god..  1 min alternating between single and dual arm waves followed by 1 mins rest then again for 5 sets at the end of your cardio routine gets the heart and lungs working.

Im making small increases in the weight training also, its difficult as I feel a lack of energy have way through a push or pull exercise as if there is a lack of explosive power.  I am decreasing the weight and increasing reps, realising I am running on a high calorific deficit.

Outside Activity

Weekly badminton and walking at lunchtime and evenings is keeping the blood pumping and a good head clearing when at work, I really do enjoy walking and getting some fresh air on these cold crisp days.  I might take a day off soon and go into London and have a walk around the city, ive not done that for years and quite fancy a mooch around.  ( Note to Wife who will read this, this means with you x x )


My Trainers are knackered, I am planning on hitting  specialist runners shop who can properly measure my walking and recommend the right trainer / insole for my gym and soon trail running.  I have heard some great feedback from people who finally invest in a proper measure pair of running shoes, think its time I look after my feet a little more.  Please let me know if you’ve had a similar experience?


And finally, 101 days, that number is tumbling fast.  I have been talking to a close friend who is also doing Tough Mudder about some warm up events in late March / April so watch this space.
