As I have touched on in one of my previous posts I am on a journey, of weight loss and fitness and I don’t think I have shared what I am doing?

I have been following the Cambridge weight loss programme See Here , my wife has been on “Soul Source”  Step 1 programme and the results are amazing.  The Cambridge weight loss programme is what is called a VLC ( Very Low Calorie ) diet.  The diet plan has changed recently but there are essentially 5 steps, step 1 is soul source whereby you have 4 Cambridge meal replacement products a day approx 600 – 800 calories, as you go up the stages your drop the number of products a day and increase meals and calories to compensate.

I have started on stage three and I am essentially on 1000 calories a day, this is made up of a breakfast about 150 calories, a product for lunch, a dinner of about 400 calories then for me I have one final product in the day and some calories for skimmed milk in my coffee.  Let me just say I am not person who likes shakes, protein shakes etc..  So the various flavours of shakes that are on offer are out for me.  There are porridge’s, soups and even some meals like spaghetti bolognese or savoury tikka rice,  to be honest most items are tasty so there is plenty of choice depending on your preference.  I must just add there is also microwave meals which are, I think somewhere between 300-400 calories I have never tried them myself.

Those eagle eyed among you will see the bars, these are my saving grace, I am a bar person and this was what has helped me enormously.   I believe the programme was changed about 12 months ago as you used to be only allowed 1 bar a day as there used to be more carbs in them, however since changes to the formula and rule changes from the government around VLC diets this has changed and you can have just bars.  For me who has not mentioned or told what I am doing to anyone other than my wife the convenience and discreetness of a bar are perfect, they tasty bloody lovely too.  I have 4 different boxes of flavours at the moment, Peanut, Mint Choc, Lemon & Chocolate.  My consultant laughs at this but my favourite lunchtime bar is lemon, as its like having coffee and lemon drizzle cake and the chocolate mint is the after dinner treat as it reminds me of after eights, whatever works I say….

This is probably a good time to mention water, this will become your friend, I would estimate 70% plus of people don’t drink enough water and believe me the benefits are enormous, I know we all know it but until you start upping your intake you don’t fully appreciate it.  The Cambridge advice is to have about 2.5 litres of water a day, if you have bars they say at least another glass when you have a bar to help digestion.  In doing something like this, which lets face it is very taxing on your mind and body you need to essentially flush your system and help your liver break down the fat in your body and support your organ functions.  Drinking water also help suppress appetite, in fact a lot of the time when people are hungry its actually the body telling you that it needs water…..  The other benefits are your skin, and just general well being and feeling energised, trust me, i know we are always told to drink more water but it really does help and makes you feel better.  I can probably guess what you are thinking now, I cant just drink water, well no you don’t have to.  I have coffee and use a small amount of skimmed mil through the day, track the calories and incorporate that into my day.  I’m also a big coke zero fan, I cant stand the full sugar fizzy drinks but low calorie / zero calorie drinks are my issue!  You can have these on the diet and I have talked it through my my consultant, I am controlling this by limiting myself to a can ( OK maybe two ) a day, they are essentially zero calories but they can for some people lead to snacking so its something to keep an eye on.  There is however a little silver lining to the water you will be drinking, you can get flavourings, my go to flavour is :

You don’t want to be having these is huge amounts but like Ms Popping said, a spoonful helps the medicine go down ……

I need to give a mention about my Cambridge consultant, clear any thought you have of group sessions or anything strange, I know most people screw there faces up when you say this about weight loss programmes.  You see your consultant on a one to one basis, they are who you buy your products from, and they weigh you and talk to you about how you are getting on, this I have found invaluable.  I can sometimes be in and out in 10 mins, other times I am there for 30 mins waffling on about my week, I am quite lucky once I commit my mind to something I can settle into the routine so most weeks I don’t have any issues I need to talk about.  My consultant also sends out Whatsapp messages, has a private Facebook group and checks in at least twice a week which you can respond or not but it helps to know someone is there if you need to ask a question.

I would like to add what the costs are but you know what I don’t have that  exact info to hand right now, I think my wife who had about 3 products a day was about £35 a week  and me with my 14 bars a week is less than that but bars cost more so something like £28.

So in the interest of sharing with you, as if you’ve come this far you are probably thinking, yeah but is it any good does it work? Well I am still dealing with what I was, this is not the me now so I will share my weight in due course but I have been consistently losing about 4-5 lbs a week sometimes more and in the first few weeks as your body loses initial carbs and water in the system I lost a lot more.

So there we go, I have put it out there what i’m doing and I will continue to bring you along my journey, share my meal tips and my training as I am preparing for something big in 2017 as a physical challenge and target.

If you would like to know more please let me know..

The title for this blog note came from my wife who told me the other day taking a compliment is something I struggle with.  I have been having a bad week and not feeling very good about myself and feeling very low, so low that even a positive turned into a negative.

It may seem strange to some people but my self confidence issues mean that even a compliment in my head turns into, “Do they mean it?” “Are they trying to tell me something”  “oh god what do they really think?”

I said to someone a while back I have lost something, I don’t know what it is or where it went but I have lost it.  This is in part why I am doing what I am doing, writing this blog writing down my challenges as I try and make a change in my life.

I keep wanting to put into a blog all the ideas and subjects I want to cover, maybe I will soon but this is just a short update to acknowledge that I need to learn to take a compliment and not always look for a negative that is 99% of the time is not there.

Be positive I have a lot of great stuff going on in my life just about now and to look forward too in 2017 so enjoy the moment.

That will teach me for being too confident with Arsenal, oh well top of the league for now..

Weekends are always so short and you have lots to do so today was a quick trip to Costco.  Cleaning towels, steak and some salad were needed! We then went onto a indoor kids soft play aptly named “The Madhouse”.  My son had a great time and after 90 mins of chaos it was time to go.  A quiet journey home, one very tired boy..

I managed to get a 45 min trip to the gym in and did some cardio and leg work. It is now 195 days until a big challenge I have set myself, I will save the details for another day..

People even when joking can sometimes inadvertently hurt you.  Being a bigger guy I am all too used to peoples making comments and jokes. The jokes do hurt me and I am not going to get hung up on it but just some days it hits you like a dagger..

So, I said I would go live and I have to go for it, so, counting down I will go live today!

Just heading out with the family to the park and then some shopping and I am coming back to publish.  I need to get to the gym somewhere in between as my wife is meeting her friends tonight and they live down towards Brighton so dad duties for me from late afternoon.

Aresenal are playing Middlesbrough at 3pm today, I am tempting fate but we should play them off the park, these are the games we should ease past!  Its late October now we should be getting into top gear and putting the cruise control on and have our foot on the accelerator ready to blitz anything that gets in our way.  Also my fantasy team could do with a boost this week so come on Walcott and Sanchez…

Hope everyone is having a good weekend and chills out and has lots of fun.

So the site is still being “worked” on, to be honest I know I need to spend a good day just getting the basics how I want them but that wont be until next weekend now and I need to start putting down some thoughts ..

I signed up to “The Gym” in the week you can check them out Here I needed to do this for myself, I miss that feeling I used to have back when I used to go 5 times a week.  This company is a breath of fresh air, whilst I am still not where I want to be I know that spending £80+ is not for me right now, this is where The gym group come in, £17.99 a month for 24 hour access to a gym with masses of modern equipment and a no frills attitude.

I signed up online ( £20 joining fee 🙁 but offers always available for signups ) and within 5 minutes I had my unique pin and member area.  The pin is how you access the building, I’ll come back to this.  So I logged into the members area and found all the gym info, rules etc and options to book an induction , PT sessions etc, I also noticed it tells you how often you have been, motivation enough for me!  I have never had this before, an online portal to manage your gym membership and a very useful FAQ section which is probably one of a handful of FAQs that I have ever found useful..  Fresh with new member excitement I decided to head straight down and have the newbie look around, I must point out at this point I drive past the place almost everyday so have been staring in the window for months.  I park up, check my welcome email for like the 10th time to try and remember my code and head to the door.  Once you get into the foyer there is an airlock portal type system with a keypad, I am used to these from my life in data centres but never anywhere else and I nervously punch in my code, Bingo!  the first door opens and I nonchalantly step forward like this isn’t my first time.  As soon as you are in the door behind you closes and the inner door slides open and you are in, Imagine a movie sequence, something from star trek…

As soon as you step forward you are met with the air conditioned blast and music pumping out, plenty of screens showing information and you are immediately drawn to the industrial like setup of exposed air conditioning vents and trunks. First order of business is to sort out a padlock for the lockers, I read on the members area that part of the no frills setup is that you need to provide your own padlock for the lockers or purchase one for £4 from a vending machine just as you get in the door, I actually like the idea of having my own padlock, you obviously cant keep a locker just for yourself but something reassuring to have your own secure lock.

  • Bag put away – Check
  • Phone – Check
  • Headphones – Check
  • Towel – Check

Now time to go an check the machines out.  I opt to head straight for a stationery bike in front of one of the screens so that I can warm-up, take a look around and get used to the surroundings.  “Quick Start” routine selected I put my headphones in then join the free member WiFi after a short enrollment page, open spotify and focus.

Looking around I am struck by the kit, all modern and such a variety, this gym is over two floors, there seems to be masses of weight machines and free weights and loads of cardio equipment, its busy but there is plenty of equipment.   The music is playing over the gyms sound system and the screens are positing a mixture of adverts and music etc.  One thing that has struck me is that there seems to be a cleaner wondering around the entire time tidying and a member of the gym PT staff cleaning the actual machines, the place is spotless, I have since spoken to another person I know uses the facilities and they said the same.  30 mins have now passed and time to get off the bike, I wipe down the equipment, IMPORTANT NOTE – as part of the no frills there are no wipe down towels you located around the gym, this doesn’t bother me and if it means keeping the price down I am happy to use the towel I think everyone should bring.

There are people having one 2 one training sessions and plenty of people around so I decide to venture around and have a look and use some of the fixed weight machines, there is a great variety of machines suitable for all sizes and ability and information on how to use them, I decide to go with the machines I am familiar with and not focus on one body area but more reintroduce myself to working out.  I did a good walkabout and found the upstairs had even more equipment and the MyRide virtual spinning bikes all of which I will save for another blog.

Finally I go and check the changing rooms and showers, for me this can be make or break on a facility.  I needn’t have worried its clean, practical functional and exactly what you need, no more no less.

The Gym have managed to deliver a service which is priced exactly where it needs to be, it has just what you need with none of the extras which to be honest most people seldom use and it creates an environment with a buzz about it and you are there to do your workout rather than show off or talk and kill time.

So I am putting this blog live now just a few days before I sit down and get the site looking how I want and let people know its here and have “day 1”
